Jude

Jude didn’t know how long he and Cope sat on the kitchen floor, crying on each other’s shoulders. It could have been an hour. Hell, it could have been two. When Cope got up to check on Wolf and to hop in the shower, Jude stayed where he was with his back against the oven door and his ass cooled by the tile floor. If left to his own devices, he would fall asleep where he sat.

“Not a good idea, Jude. You’re closing in on forty. Sleeping on the cold kitchen floor would practically paralyze you.” Bertha Craig cackled from beside him.

“What are you doing here? I thought we wouldn’t see you for a while after you used your energy to power my mother.” Jude snorted and started to laugh, feeling almost hysterical. After all the emotion from earlier, it felt good to let it all go.

“Crow was really the one giving Carol his juice.” Bertha snorted. “That didn’t sound right, but you know what I mean. Anyway, he said something about the Navajo people owing your mother for the gift of you and for the way Victor treated her. I’ll tell you something, kiddo. I wouldn’t want to be your father when Crow gets his hands on him. He’s angrier than a pack of wet cats.”

“Why did he lie to me?” Jude asked. He wanted to hear what Bertha had to say about his mother, but this was the one question he needed answered. His father had gained nothing by lying about Carol for all those years, so why did he do it?

“I don’t know. Not the answer you wanted, but it’s all I’ve got.” Bertha paused, reaching for Jude’s hand. “He could have told you Carol ran away with the circus or was an alien from outer space. There was no one to contradict his story. Nothing stopped him from telling the truth other than the fact that he wanted your undivided loyalty. Don’t ask why. I can’t tell you that either.” She didn’t look pleased with her lack of information.

Jude sat with Bertha’s answer. He supposed the only person who could answer that question was Victor himself. That little reunion would have to wait. He wasn’t going to let anyone, let alone his lying father, ruin Christmas with his family. “Your husband was a huge dick. Why did you tell your kids the truth about him?”

Bertha grinned. “Corny was a son-of-a-bitch, most of the time, never wanted to work a day in his life and was always on the hustle, but that man could make me laugh. Of course, I couldn’t feed my son's laughter.” She rolled her eyes. “Telling Carson and Cole the truth about Corny was the right thing to do. Cole was only little when his father left for good, but Carson was ten. He had his own memories and feelings about the man, and it wouldn’t have been fair for me to bulldoze the happy times he had with his father. On the
